Exploring how dark matter can imprint itself of the assembly of galaxies

Recent paper by Ilem Leisher - including CosmicAI Researchers Paul Torrey, Alex Garcia, Zach Lubberts, Arya Farahi, and Nitya Kallivayalil - explored how dark matter can imprint itself of the assembly of galaxies

What the team did
Using data from the DREAMS simulation project, we investigate the assembly history of over 1000 Milky Way-mass galaxies. We quantify how sensitive the assembly of the Milky Way is to uncertainties in astrophysics modeling as well as dark matter properties.

What researchers found
We find that the assembly history of the Milky Way depends on the assumed dark matter and supernova physics parameters.

Why the work matters
This work shows, for the first time, that future constraints on the growth of the Milky Way can potentially reveal the nature of dark matter.

The paper was published in The Astrophysical Journal.
